The Ministerium für Staatssicherheit – Stasi – was East Germany’s internal secret police force.
It enforced DDR government policy, running such a pervasive and ruthless network of informers that it could divide and rule its own society, in line with the single party state, through fear.
The Stasi were routinely deployed against the Military Liaison Missions. And, routinely, the Missions avoided or evaded them. Yet, most touring members of these Missions would be ‘watched’ and files constructed about their activities.
The Federal Commission for the Stasi files can be found here.
